By   /   September 24, 2010  /   4 Comments

It’s hard to talk about what you suck at.

It’s hard to talk about what you suck at. It’s no fun. Nonetheless, it is vital if you want to grow and get better. The tough thing about your own weaknesses is that you are usually the last person to identify them, and it seems like others can sometimes be just a liiiiiiitle too happy to point them out to you—usually when you really don’t want to hear them!

Learning how to identify and examine your weaknesses as a composer, mixer, orchestrator, editor, player, copyist, manager/agent, executive… whatever, is an important step in creating the career you’ve always wanted. However, it doesn’t end there. If you really want to move yourself to the next level, not only do you have to figure out what your weaknesses are, but then you have to find a way to conquer them. You have to follow through on a solution if you want achieve more for yourself.

MY biggest weakness is that I’m never completely satisfied. I always try to walk the extra mile on my projects which in the end turns out to be an extra 100 miles. In the business world I often heard the quote “done beats perfect” which I now try to adapt into my work ethics. Although I deeply struggle with this wisdom it seems to get things done faster and I must admit that with a little distance my work wasn’t that bad after all.

Crap, there are so many… I struggle with working alone alot, I love starting more than finishing, my perfectionist self gives me so much abuse before a deadline I often cry, I have trouble motivating myself to do the paperwork….I bite off more than I can chew, I stay up late and don’t pace myself so I get under-slept, I give away alot of my time and energy unpaid to people, I struggle to do enough networking….maybe my biggest weakness is…..ME!

But I love it, and people who hire me often hire me again, so I must be doing some thing right…

My plans to tackle my biggest weakness? Learn a little self love… :)

Well… suck and such… I work too fast. I use to hand in my stuff 2 days before the deadline and then with-in the last 20 hours I have to make massive changes.. It quite destroyed my life of beeing too effective.

Now I just need to hold myself back and relax, delivering on the DEADLINE day.

Even thought that my schedule is quite irregular, I never know when my next music job will arrive in my lap. I really want to start up a band on the side so I don’t forget my chops on my horn. It’s incredibly difficult to make all these things work together. But I just had to deal with it that I once used to be a band-leader and now I have to work alone for the most part. Doesn’t feel fun, but atleast I made great friends in the process who can do recordings on other instruments I’m not skilled at.

PS. I haven’t practised my horn for over 2 years since I started going pro. DS (Massive guilt in here for that one!)

I’m poor at doing all the paperwork, I have to inflict actual physical punishment on myself before I think about sitting down to fill out forms for the Sacem, accountants, lawyers etc.

Oh, and I don’t get enough sleep.

No plans to conquer either of these weaknesses in the immediate future.
